A change in Tesla’s referral economics in the United States has moved the focus away from buying a vehicle and toward FSD access: under the revised Refer and Earn setup, a referral code no longer produces a vehicle reward for either the buyer or the referrer. Instead, eligible referrers can earn FSD time in a month-for-month arrangement, with $99/month subscription conditions and credit caps defining the benefit.

According to Electrek, Tesla’s support page for FSD referral says the person doing the referring must currently pay for FSD at $99/month or have bought the upfront FSD version before Tesla stopped selling that purchase path. Only then can they create a referral link on the Refer and Earn screen in Tesla App version 4.62.0 or newer. An owner whose FSD came only as a one-year gifted period is not eligible.
When the referred customer converts from a trial into a paid subscription, the referrer can choose either one free month of FSD or a $99 Tesla credit; it is a choose-one-of-two benefit, not both. The referred customer receives one free month of FSD. The credit expires after 12 months and cannot be withdrawn as cash.
The program caps payouts at 12 times per year. That means the practical annual ceiling is 12 months of FSD or $1188 in Tesla credits.
The referral page’s terms also narrow the remaining vehicle-related benefits. Current buyer incentives apply only to solar panels, while referrer incentives cover solar, a first test drive (up to 30 times lifetime), and FSD referrals. Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck appear only in loyalty benefits, relevant when an existing owner buys more Tesla products. Model S and Model X are not listed at all.
The page shows February 24, 2026 as an update date, but Tesla did not issue a formal announcement for the change. The absence of an official notice means Tesla has not announced that a new-purchase referral incentive program has been fully discontinued.
For readers tracking Tesla’s U.S. Refer and Earn policy, the practical takeaway is simple: referral value is now framed around FSD eligibility, subscription status, and capped month-for-month rewards rather than an immediate reward for selling a car.
