Memory Bottlenecks Persist as AI Buildout Lifts HBM Demand Through 2030

The expansion of generative AI services, large model training and dedicated data-center construction has made high-bandwidth memory one of the most supply-sensitive components in the technology stack. SK hynix expects this demand to remain firm over the coming years.

New capacity is slow to come online

SK hynix says it is advancing new facilities and larger advanced-packaging capacity, yet memory production scaling cannot be completed in a short window. More process complexity, packaging equipment constraints, construction lead times and workforce availability slow the release of incremental output.

Infrastructure investment is projected to stay rapid until 2030

The company forecasts that AI infrastructure development will continue to move quickly before 2030. Major internet firms, cloud providers and sovereign AI initiatives are increasing spending on high-performance computing platforms, which require more HBM and premium DRAM than conventional servers.

GPU memory intensity rises with model scale

As AI models grow, the HBM attached to each accelerator also increases. Across generations such as HBM3, HBM3E and future HBM4 products, storage demand per AI accelerator expands quickly, tightening the supply-demand balance further.

Additional supply may struggle to close the gap

SK hynix said supply is being strengthened through advanced-packaging capacity expansion, new chip factories and efficiency gains. Even with broad industry investment, persistent demand growth means supply catch-up remains difficult.

Market position and chokepoint outlook

SK hynix currently leads in HBM and is an important partner for Nvidia and other AI chip suppliers. Competition for advanced memory is expected to stay intense as technology companies race to build AI data centers.

If the AI sector follows its present trajectory, HBM, higher-end DRAM and related packaging capacity are likely to remain critical bottlenecks in the semiconductor supply chain. The outlook also signals a broader industry expectation: performance-memory demand may stay elevated long enough that even expanded production leaves the market structurally tight.
