BettaScore's reviewer-versus-owner set contains 6,900 opinions from YouTube and 3,567 opinions from Reddit across 14 product areas. Reliability and support concerns, including durability, appear in 7.8% of reviewer opinions but 17.0% of owner opinions. Owners mention the issue more often in 13 of the 14 areas; tennis ball machines are the only exception, and that area has 91 owner opinions. The first chart axis markers are 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60%. Video doorbells, smart thermostats, mechanical keyboards and 3D scanners are excluded because reliability talk sits inside broader labels such as Connection, Reliability & Support. Pickleball machines are excluded because no Reddit threads exist.

Timing explains much of the distance. A YouTube reviewer may have a unit for a few weeks, while owners often report problems months later. Robot vacuums sit at 1% on the reviewer side and 18% on the owner side. Self-cleaning litter boxes sit at 3% and 39%, with owner reports centering on broken devices and replacement delays. Sentiment differs too: 70% of reliability opinions from owners are negative, against 15% from reviewers.
Apps, software and connectivity receive similar attention, 8.2% of reviewer opinions and 9.4% of owner opinions. They do not receive similar judgments: 21% of reviewer app opinions are negative, while 71% of owner app opinions are negative. The axis markers for this comparison are 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%.

The table keeps only categories with at least 20 positive or negative owner opinions on apps. All eight categories meet that line, and Reddit owners are more negative in each.
The Glowforge Pro is a $7,999 laser engraver that ranks last of 9. Setup and ease of use receive 8 positive opinions and 0 negative opinions. Software and connectivity receive 3 positive opinions and 7 negative opinions. Reliability and support receive 2 positive opinions and 7 negative opinions. Owner criticism focuses on a paid software subscription and the need for an internet connection to operate the machine.
The Eufy FamiLock S3 is a $350 smart lock that ranks last of 20. Its app and smart-home features receive 0 positive opinions and 7 negative opinions, centered on a firmware update that made locks unusable. All 10 sources for this product are Reddit threads.
There is no evidence that reviewers conceal problems. Their work is usually made in the first days or weeks with a fresh unit, before most failures and before a company's support process can be tested.
Owner threads become more visible when something goes wrong, because a functioning robot vacuum rarely creates a post. The percentages therefore describe owner concerns, not a complete rate of breakdowns. Across all topics, 56% of owner opinions and 15% of reviewer opinions are negative. Reliability at 70% and apps at 71% are above the owners' own average.
Topic grouping affects the result. If mixed labels such as Value & Support or Responsiveness & Key Reliability are included, owners mention reliability 2.4 times as often instead of twice, and they lead in all 17 categories that contain owner opinions. BettaScore uses the stricter figure. The same rule applies to apps, so mixed labels such as Connectivity & Battery are omitted.
Sponsored YouTube reviews exist. They are counted with all other sources, and the dataset cannot reliably determine which ones are sponsored.
An AI model assigns each opinion a topic and a sentiment label. Each opinion links back to its source sentence, so any judgment can be checked.
The comparison uses YouTube reviews and Reddit threads about 657 products currently on sale in 19 categories, collected for BettaScore's rankings. It contains 8,062 opinions from YouTube and 4,525 opinions from Reddit. Other review sites, forums and Hacker News, with 517 opinions, are outside the reviewer-versus-owner comparison.
An opinion is one product topic viewed by one source. If one source discusses five topics, it contributes five opinions. If one source mentions the same topic ten times, it contributes once.
The reliability group contains any topic about reliability, durability, warranty, service or support. The apps group contains any topic about apps, software, firmware or connectivity. Mixed labels are omitted from both groups.
A share divides topic-group opinions by all platform opinions, including neutral opinions. A negative share uses only positive and negative opinions.
