ItInsightsWorld General Briefing: OLED MacBook Pro Expansion May Cut Mini-LED Shipments by 75% Within Two Years

ItInsightsWorld has compiled the panel-market implications of a rumored shift toward OLED MacBook Pro configurations, with Counterpoint Research forecasting a steep drop in Mini-LED notebook display shipments from 2025 through 2027.

Mini-LED Notebook Displays Face Rapid Decline

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple is expected to bring OLED display technology into the MacBook Pro line, putting pressure on Mini-LED notebook panels. The research firm projects cumulative annual shipment decline of about 75% over the 2025-2027 period.

Apple has used Mini-LED displays in MacBook Pro models since 2021. Counterpoint estimates Mini-LED-equipped notebook panel shipments will fall 38% in 2026 and another 60% in 2027. After two consecutive years of contraction, total volume would be roughly one-quarter of the 2025 shipment scale.

OLED Adoption Gains Pace

In contrast, OLED notebook panel shipments are expected to grow 50% in 2026 and a further 24% in 2027, representing overall growth of about 86% versus 2025. Counterpoint points to the upcoming OLED MacBook Pro and rising demand for high-end AI PCs as key drivers, even though the overall notebook display market is forecast to shrink 3% in 2026.

Panel makers are increasingly adopting OLED because it can support lighter and thinner structures, stronger image quality and improving cost competitiveness. Tandem OLED design and larger production line rollouts are also seen as additional growth supports.

Possible MacBook Pro Hardware Changes

The display transition could also mark a major shift in Mac history. Reports indicate the next OLED MacBook Pro may support touch input for the first time. Korean media previously said Samsung Display would be the exclusive supplier of OLED touch panels for new 14-inch and 16-inch products, manufacturing them on its 8.6-generation line in Asan, South Korea.

Apple is expected to unveil OLED MacBook Pro at the Pro and tell event in Los Angeles on October 28. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman previously said the new models would reduce weight noticeably and abandon the current notch design in favor of a Dynamic Island approach similar to iPhone.

During the transition, Apple may sell both OLED and Mini-LED MacBook Pro options, giving buyers a choice, while Mini-LED models are expected to phase out over time. The OLED version's starting price is reportedly up to $500 higher than current models.

ItInsightsWorld will continue tracking how OLED MacBook Pro adoption, Counterpoint Research forecasts, and Apple supply-chain signals reshape notebook panel economics across 2026 and 2027.
