Door-opening accidents, commonly described as dooring risk, are the issue behind NIO’s whole-vehicle door-opening warning video. On October 28, the company said the feature can present the outside view beside the door being opened and trigger light and sound alerts if the movement is judged likely to create a collision.
Li Bin, the NIO founder and chairman, said the system may show the relevant side-and-rear image when an occupant unbuckles a seat belt or begins to push a door. If two people prepare to exit from opposite sides, the screen can divide the display into separate zones so both outside views remain visible.
The capability is built on the Shenji NX9031 chip. Current coverage includes the all-new ES8, ET9 and ES9; the 2025 and 2026 model-year NIO ES6 and EC6; and the 2026 model-year ONVO L60, L80 and L90. Users can turn the function on or off manually through the “Settings — Safety — Door-opening Warning Video” menu.
Li Bin stressed that the video is intended to give occupants more reference information while checking the surroundings before leaving the vehicle. It does not replace personal observation, so passengers should still look for nearby traffic before opening a door.
