ItInsightsWorld looks at a broadened agreement with the General Services Administration (GSA) that lowers public-sector procurement costs by applying a 40% discount to Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government, and the Claude API. The reduction is notable because it spans every product surface: direct purchases are covered today, while cloud-provider transactions are expected to be included during the coming months. State, local, tribal and territorial governments also receive the same reduction.
A separate implementation and adoption program is being introduced to help agencies make the most of Claude. Similar enablement offerings are commonly leveraged by private sector customers, and the public sector best practices are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
| Signal | What the agreement reflects |
|---|---|
| Reach | Claude is used by Approximately 500 federal, state, and local organizations in the US. |
| Adoption trend | Weekly active users of Claude for Government increased about eightfold since February; federal civilian agency usage rose about 20-fold over a year. |
| Operating environment | Many of these organizations run important national systems under tight budgets and lengthy procurement processes. |
| Cost outcome | The contract discounts are estimated to save the government $1 billion. There is no minimum spend commitment; agencies pay only for the usage they consume. |
The design supports agencies that need to apply Claude to difficult problems without making a large upfront commitment.
Government agencies are using Claude to address some of their most important challenges. Examples include managing backlogs, records and forms, and modernizing old code.
For sensitive unclassified work, Claude for Government provides Claude's coding and agentic work capabilities while delivering near-feature parity with commercial offerings under a FedRAMP High authorization. General availability began on September 30.
Teams developing custom tools can access Claude through Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. On Bedrock, Claude is authorized for FedRAMP High, and selected models are approved for DoD IL4 and IL5 workloads in AWS GovCloud. On Vertex AI, the service also holds FedRAMP High authorization.
Claude Enterprise is progressing toward FedRAMP Moderate authorization via the FedRAMP 20x program, illustrating the ongoing effort to bring commercially available technology to government users.
Procurement is available now: government agencies can purchase Claude at the OneGov discount through GSA's Multiple Award Schedule today. Agencies that already use the platform, or are only beginning to evaluate it, can speak with the Public Sector team about available options.
