A compact, responsive area on the screen now gives Mac users a shortcut to Apple services: Spotlight, Siri, and live activities can appear and remain reachable while another app is in use. The update appears on the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.
Apple introduced the Dynamic Island concept on the iPhone in September 2022, beginning with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. It replaced the notch with a smaller depth-sensing camera opening, then used the surrounding software to expand and reshape the area for alerts, live activities, and controls.
On the Mac, the approach carries the same purpose: keep ongoing tasks visible and actionable while users work in other apps. Apple says users can answer calls, control music playback, accept AirDrop transfer requests, and open Spotlight or Siri from the interactive region. With the new MacBook Pro touchscreen, pausing a song can also be done by tapping it directly.
Important distinction: iPhone's original implementation depends on the TrueDepth camera system used for Face ID. The new MacBook Pro models still authenticate with Touch ID and include a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, so the Mac version of the Dynamic Island does not mean Face ID has come to the Mac.
In the United States, preorders for the new MacBook Pro began on October 28, with retail sales starting on November 6. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899, and the 16-inch model starts at $3,399.
