ItInsightsWorld Brief: iPhone Duo Screen Faults Surface During First Sales Week

Early display complaints about Apple's first foldable iPhone Duo appeared during the first week after sale, moving the discussion from user reports to teardown and supply-chain questions, with the hinge emerging as the likely weak point.

Shenyang MixC service response

The netizen then tried to have the device repaired at the Apple after-sales point at Shenyang MixC. Even after saying they would pay for the service, repair was not immediately possible. Apple staff reportedly said parts were out of stock, gave no confirmed replenishment date, and accepted only a registration at that stage.

Precision hinge parts and teardrop layout

Structurally, the iPhone Duo hinge is described as a precision assembly containing gears, springs and metallic connecting joints. Multiple teardown summaries say the hinge uses a common teardrop shape, while Apple adds a curved guide rail to control joint movement and reduce pressure on the display during opening and closing.

Earlier iFixit teardown concern

In an earlier iPhone Duo teardown, iFixit noted that a central support rod might fail to retract correctly when the phone is closed. If that happens, the screen could be subjected to excessive pressure.

The same teardown context pointed to the curved rail that guides hinge movement: because it may sit higher than adjacent parts when folded, unexpected rail movement could interfere with the display.

One Foxconn employee cited by Jiemian News

Jiemian News said a reporter asked one Foxconn employee about the screen barrier, and the employee's explanation was broadly consistent with the teardown analysis.

The employee added that, while production capacity was tight, Apple had previously lowered a certain yield inspection standard to protect supply. That step, in his account, would inevitably raise the likelihood that screen-fault products reach the market.

He also said the iPhone Duo production line had urgently replaced a batch of materials for the related issue, while actual production remained unaffected and the stocking strategy had not been changed for now.
