Alphabet (GOOGL) Falls About 12% as Nearly $500 Billion Vanishes: ItInsightsWorld Earnings Recap

Alphabet's latest earnings report triggered a sharp repricing on Thursday, with GOOGL sliding about 12% and marking its worst one-day performance since listing in 2004. The decline removed nearly $500 billion in market value and became the second-largest single-day loss of that kind for a U.S.-listed company.

A top-spot record behind Nvidia

The top spot remains Nvidia's, after China's DeepSeek rattled AI investors on January 27, 2025 and wiped out about $593 billion in market value. According to a Yahoo Finance calculation, Alphabet would have needed to close near $274.75, a drop approaching 15%, to match that figure. As it stands, Alphabet passed the $400 billion one-day loss recorded by SpaceX on June 22, which had previously been ranked as the second-largest in history.

The biggest dollar drawdown for Alphabet itself

In absolute dollar terms, this was the most damaging trading day Alphabet has had as a listed company. Its previous largest one-day market-cap loss was about $275 billion on July 23. Bespoke Investment also said the reaction to the results was the deepest post-earnings fall since the company's debut, beating the prior mark of a nearly 10% stock drop in July 2008.

Cloud growth, Gemini scale and search softness

The financial disclosures offered evidence for both bulls and bears. Google Cloud revenue doubled to about $31 billion, and the Gemini application surpassed 1 billion users. At the same time, search revenue grew 12% to roughly $63 billion, below the Wall Street estimate of $65 billion. With AI investment accelerating, free cash flow — money left after spending on data centers and similar capital projects — turned into a deficit of about $9 billion, while large AI-related costs weighed on overall performance.

Pivotal Research chief executive officer Jeffrey Wlodarczuk said that bears will see this as the first quarter in which AI has begun to clearly erode the core search business.

CFRA analyst Angelo Zino was relatively upbeat, telling Yahoo Finance that the pullback may be a buying opportunity.

An increasingly crowded list of giant losses

A market-cap loss of this size once felt unprecedented, but the calendar has filled quickly. Yahoo Finance, citing Bloomberg data, found that through this Wednesday, U.S. listed companies have experienced 18 single-day reductions of $200 billion or more this year, while the full year of 2025 contained 13 such events and none occurred before 2022. Since its share price peak in May this year, Alphabet alone has lost about $1.4 trillion in market value.

The next test: Amazon's report

Amazon is scheduled to publish the last of the three major cloud providers' results this week after Thursday's close. If AWS accelerates strongly while its cash flow remains intact, attention may focus on Google's search unit as the source of the miss. If Amazon also shows a sizable quarterly cash burn, the broader AI investment thesis could face renewed skepticism.
