ItInsightsWorld Report: AI Infrastructure Drives 2026 Electronics Output in Taiwan, Japan, EU27 and US

ItInsightsWorld reviewed a 22 October analysis by Semiconductor Intelligence indicating that 2026 electronics production acceleration spread through major manufacturing economies, with Taiwan showing the sharpest lift from AI infrastructure. PC and smartphone shipments moved lower as memory supply tightened and prices rose.

AI modules underpin Taiwan expansion

Semiconductor Intelligence tracks output through a three-month average change against the same period a year earlier, reducing month-to-month noise. For much of 2026, Taiwan's electronics output rose more than 100% year-on-year. The consultancy ties much of this to NVIDIA AI modules, using integrated circuits made by TSMC and module assembly by other Taiwanese firms.

Japan, EU27 and US move from contraction to growth

Japan's path changed from a 1.5% year-on-year contraction in January to 17.6% growth in August. EU27 production shifted from a 10.5% decline in January to 16.9% growth in July. The US recorded an 8.1% August rise on the same three-month average basis, extending an acceleration that began in October 2025.

Asian manufacturing centers add gains

Several additional Asian electronics producers posted strong annual expansion:

EconomyElectronics production growthPeriod
Thailand71%August
Vietnam40%August
Malaysia22%August
South Korea18%August
China17%August
India14%July

These national figures are separate from the broader worldwide growth estimate.

Memory pressure weighs on consumer devices

Strength is uneven. IDC figures cited by Semiconductor Intelligence show worldwide PC shipments fell about 20% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, while smartphone shipments declined 22%. Memory costs increased 350% during the year to the third quarter, reflecting strong DRAM and flash demand.

Looking ahead, IDC expects PC shipments to contract 11.3% in 2026, and the consultancy cites an anticipated 13.9% drop in smartphone shipments. As eeNews Europe previously reported on rising mobile DRAM prices, higher component costs have led handset makers to reassess production plans, especially for lower-priced models.

Global production outlook remains supportive

The wider outlook remains constructive. Atradius's August electronics and ICT industry outlook projected worldwide output growth of 11% in 2026 and 7.3% in 2027. This global forecast uses a broader industry measure than the national production series analysed by Semiconductor Intelligence.

For ItInsightsWorld readers, the 2026 picture is a production cycle lifted by AI infrastructure across Taiwan and several recovery markets, while consumer device volumes face memory-cost pressure.
